High-level meeting in Zagreb on fostering cohesion and competitiveness through regional cooperation

Minister Alenka Smerkolj visited Zagreb to meet with counterparts at the conference ‘’Fostering Cohesion and Competitiveness through Regional Cooperation’’ which was organised by the Croatian Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds on 6 June. The ministers exchanged views and experience on strategic goals of EU Cohesion Policy, and discussed a variety of issues, including promotion of the economy, social and territorial cohesion and reduction of disparities between countries and regions. Major focus of discussion was the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).

Minister Smerkolj underlined that the importance of Cohesion Policy funding cannot be overstated, but showed understanding for the Commission’s proposed cuts to Cohesion Policy funding. Ms Smerkolj stressed that Slovenia acknowledges the fact that the funding should be, as a priority, earmarked for newly emerging issues on top of the political agenda, i.e. security and migration.

The meeting brought together regional cooperation ministers from Croatia, Slovenia, Poland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Albania, and state secretary from Hungary.
